Exploring the wonder of Milford Sound is a must-do, but what makes going early in the day so special... golden hues, glistening peaks and morning stillness.
Escape the busier periods of the day in Milford Sound, by getting to the well-known fiord early in the morning to experience it like no other.
Yes, you’re on holiday and getting up early isn’t usually on the agenda. However, trust us the experience is well worth getting up early for.
During the New Zealand summer/autumn season, (November – April), taking the first scenic flight into Milford Sound at 8am is an unreal experience. Giving you the ability to escape into the unofficial ‘eighth natural wonder of the world’, and embark on an early cruise, before the coach tours arrive into Milford Sound.
Sunrise flying over the Southern Alps & Fiordland National Park, boasts stunning gold glows upon the mountain peaks, glistening alpine lakes and lush valleys as far as the eye can see. As your pilot navigates the length of the fiord, you’ll have the opportunity to admire the cascading waterfalls and steep, lush peaks before being the first to land at the tiny Milford Airport.
The awe inspiring landscapes, the silence on the fiord, and the fresh morning sea breeze are just a few of the reasons why visiting first thing in the morning is unparalleled.
Getting in and out early in the day also gives you the option to make the most of your afternoon. Expect to be back at your accommodation in Queenstown around 12:30pm, this gives you ample time to grab some lunch before heading off on your next adventure.
If flying isn’t your thing, you can drive into Milford Sound and join an early cruise. We highly recommend this if you are staying in the nearest town, Te Anau (pronounced Teh – Ah – Now). Milford Sound is a 2-hour drive from Te Anau, allow extra time to enjoy the stunning scenic stops along the way before exiting the Homer Tunnel and winding your way down into the Milford Valley.
